TommyLog – Focus on the Core

When will it end? Companies sending out product after product, making a small tweak and the releasing a new version. Division after division of the same crap!! In this day and age of HUGE companies collapsing under their own weight, when will they learn? Why don’t they focus on their core products?

How many different models of Dell laptops are there? Sony, HP? Hundreds! Before the collapse of GM, how many different divisions did they have? They ditched Oldsmobile, Pontiac, SAAB, Hummer, and Saturn to focus on their core. Apple in the early 1990′s up the return of Steve Jobs had many different lines, PowerMac, Performa with numbers like the 8150, 7100, 6105 etc. Once Steve came back he put his foot down and nixed all that. Do you know how many laptop lines Apple has now? Apple has 2, MacBook, Air and MacBook Pro. The largest company in the world, at last look, really only has 7 major product lines, iPhone, iPad, Mac Mini, Macbook, iMac, Mac Pro and iPod. That’s it. Well there is the Apple TV also, does that count?

What does this type of efficiency get them? Better distribution, saved support calls to name a few. Maybe we should take a look internally and see if we are focusing on the core.

The core being family. Are you focusing on what’s important? Think about it!

Today I’m in Oshkosh and recording on my iPhone. I have been listening to Steve Jobs book called iCon and the topic of learning from mistakes has come up. How would society be if we took a page from this book and actually learned from our mistakes.

TommyLog – The Things We Take for Granted – RIP Steve Jobs

This past week we lost one of the greatest and most brilliant minds in my time and possibly ever. My father called and likened Steve Jobs to the mind of Albert Einstein, WOW now that’s saying a lot. To think Steve stared Apple in his home garage, was kicked out, brought back when the company was on the verge of death and today, Apple is one of the largest companies in world with stock selling right around $400.00. Stunning. So many tech items that we take for granted were made commonplace by Mr. Jobs and the team at Apple! GUI, WIFI, mouse, USB, iPod, iPad, iPhone and so many many more. What a life and what a legacy he leaves behind.

Now for the real question. What life and what legacy will we leave behind? Will we leave this world better then it was when we got here? That’s the true test of Steve and the life he left. He left this world so much better then it was when he got here. He did not accept the norm. He shot for perfection and it showed!

TommyLog: Great Ideas I Didn’t Have

Lets think about some truly great ideas. Chances are…they aren’t mine So many just killer ideas, Google, Apple, Youtube, Ebay… once right after the other. Look at Apples stock price and then look at Dell. WOW that tells a huge story. Innovation makes the world go ’round!

TommyLog New Mic

So I’m trying a new external mic and i’m not sure what I think. It seems that some of the sound is out of sync. That could mean I need a reboot…so i’m sorry ahead of time for this crappy sync. I have a audio-technica ATR3350 but its not working and I assume the battery is bad.

I’m jazzed for the Green bay social media breakfast in the am. Always great to see and hang out with good social media folks.

Well what a sad story to tell…

I was walking on Michigan Avenue sending a picture to my family… a panoramic image I had just taken and someone grabbed my brand new iPhone 4G form my hot little hands to took off. I have never ever ran faster in my life…screaming my head off. Others ran after the kid, donning a red knit hat… But he was way too fast. he took off down the stairs on the cross street of Michigan and Grand and was gone under the street. A police officer responded to the scene in seconds…but it was too late…

The poor thing was only 4 days old…

Just steps form the Michigan Avenue Apple Store… I feel so naked.

Well I hope you like your new iPhone… it takes great pictures and is so FAST!!! Scroll through the photos…. you can see my kids. I love them so.

So uncool!

I hope you get your just rewards…

Dell Gets It!

Received an email form @sarahatdell inviting me to be a part of a Customer Advisory Panel they are hosting. This is to be held in Austin, TX on June 17th. They just want to have some people who have talked Dell in Social Media to come to town and they want to listen Did I mention they would pay for all my expenses!! THEY WANT TO LISTEN!!! What a concept. How amazing!!! THANK YOU DELL for the invite… I’m sorry I can’t attend due to another engagement, but what an honor to be asked. I look forward to working with you. Dell gets it!!!

I have had some amazingly great interactions with AT&T’s customer service over the past 2 weeks. I know its glamorous to dog pile on AT&T these days with regards to iphone issues, but right now I could not be happier. Today AT&T deleted over $90 in Canadian data usage. WOW I’m just so impressed with them.

And so it Begins, First day of Work

So it begins, day number one at HC Miller in Green Bay. WOW what a difference a change in jobs makes. I just love the people who I will be working with. I’m now best buddies with Steve the new IT guy, he has been here exactly 1 week longer then I. I’m also best buds with the HR manager. Her anniversary date is the same as mine. So amazing, SO GREAT!!!!! I’m in heaven!!!

How many people hate the iPad? NOT ME!! I remember when Steve Jobs released the original iPod and the whining and moaning over that. And look at how many iPods Apple has sold? Good thing Steve didn’t listen to those guys when making decisions…and the same is true with the iPad. This will change the way we do things. The way we get information and the way we learn in schools.
